Arctic Archetypes
This body of work results from a long-running investigation into the prehistoric artefacts and mythological traditions of northern Europe. Of particular interest are the material remains of the ‘boat axe’ cultures of circumpolar Eurasia. Drawings and photographs document and catalogue a range of surviving sites and objects including rock art and hunting tools. Copper etchings mounted on wood and sculptures in wood and ceramics evolve out of these studies, conceived and exhibited as imaginary archaeological finds – pictograms, cult objects, hand tools, weapons, boats - in their own right. A further series of delicate, precisely executed line drawings situate these fictional relics in the landscape, now re-imagining them as giant sculptural constructions.
