My humanities-based research in architectural history and theory employs contemporary theoretical frameworks to interpret discrete primary source materials. In my approach and writing I stress the importance and creative potential of the material I investigate, placing particular emphasis on ‘the archive’ as an area of enquiry in its own right. Exploring relationships between anthropological fieldwork and art historical archival work through disciplinary-specific notions of ‘rites of passage’, my work embraces the archive as a vibrant and seductive site of performance rather than authority. Taking the reflexive turn in contemporary anthropology as my reference point, I lobby for a form of art history as art practice that acknowledges, critiques and works with its subjective performativity.
